This painting was to be an example of the technique I use to start an intricate painting that requires more precise drawing. I will use gray and white to establish the forms and shadows and then add color. I liked how it came out in just grayscale so I decided to leave it that way. I will probably do another in color because I really liked this old van. I thought this would be a good example of how sometimes a painting controls itself.
This took me back to my commercial art school days when we would do a lot of grayscale exercises to work on drawing, composition and value. I used pen and ink and also brush and wash in those classes. Even though I found commercial art too “neat and tidy” it did instill the need for good drawing as a foundation.
